Can we at least get farewell posts instead of this unceremonious firing bullshit? You act like these people are not beloved writers for you. They are not unseen editors or people doing coffee runs, they are people that thousands of other people look forward to reading from and interacting with.

Yeah, it blows. Hey Patrick, any way we could get farewell posts from authors? It’d be swell.

I feel like Rogoway must have gotten some sort of warning. His departure seems really convenient in hindsight.

I’m also a little surprised at how unceremonious these have been. My guess is that in the event of people leaving the organisation not in a “on to greener pastures” kind of way it doesn’t do anyone any good (least of off continuing staff) to bring up the fact that cuts need to be made. However, it sure would be nice for a post to admit as much (that is, that people aren’t being canned for unsatisfactory work or by choice). I think the departing staff deserves at least that much.

Meanwhile, this garbage clickbait piece of crap piece gets shared to the FP.
I know the intent of them sharing those type of pieces to the FP is to get us to engage and provide an enthusiast’s point of view, but it seems rather pointless to try to reason with people like Cush when they make such ridiculous statements.

Just like when they share posts from that lady that despises cars and does not provide a decent counter argument. It infuriates me.

I’m disappointed too. I’m just trying to see this from a perspective of remaining staff not kicking against the pricks. At what point will it come to that though?

I think Tyler some writing on the wall that no one else saw. I think Gawker was considering clearing house of anyone or anything that doesn’t make money, and Tyler probably saw Gawker wouldn’t see any real value in Foxtrot (they don’t care about actual content, just clickbait).

I don’t think Patrick has anything to do with this. Pretty sure his hands are tied here, which sucks. I suspect he’s being hung out to dry by forces beyond his control.

How many are we? How much is Jalopnik worth to Gawker? Two simple questions from a simple man who enjoys quality automotive journalism.

It’s not just Mate being fired, it’s the way FP has turned to crap lately. More clickbait, more Tavarish, tons of the those stupid “[insert insult here] crashes [insert price here] dollar [insert car here.] They’ve also abandoned the Jalop worthy posts, such as those about people’s rides and projects (for example, Torch’s Beetle, Bill Caswell’s BMW, etc), in favor of reviews, opinions, and gossip about new cars and car companies. It’s not the same as it used to be; now it feels like I’m getting a gmicky and less interesting version of Autoweek. Patrick also has shown a bit of an ego, such as in his post annoucing the departure of Typer Rogoway, when he describes Foxtrot Alpha as the ground breaking new thing instead of what it is: an internet blog. However, this is mostly just my opinion; feel free to reply with your own.

I don’t disagree with most of that, but I also think that all the sharing is probably forced upon Jalopnik because it’s hitched to the dumpster fire that is Gawker. They know anything Alissa writes will piss off the base, and clicks=money. Deadspin (which I also generally like) rarely gets her stuff shared. I don’t think she’s wrong about urban planning for an autonomous car future, but the self-righteousness is strong with that one. I find Tavarish and others annoying too, for various reasons. That said, given his druthers, Patrick can outwrite anyone on Jalopnik, possibly Gawker Media, and I think understands what real journalism is. His long form articles are great (the Land Rover importation stuff comes to mind), and I wish we’d see more of them. Every editor I’ve seen here has had their share of snark, but I suspect he doesn’t like this shit any more than we do and just can’t say anything about it. I don’t remember the post about Tyler’s departure, I’ll look it up.
Torch is always fun, Raph is fun and has greatly improved as an author/driver, Stef is as diehard of a racing fan as I’ve ever met, Andrew is fun to read... There’s still good stuff being posted, but it’s easily lost in the noise of the machine it’s saddled to.

And how much $$$ was a few writers and an office space in Budapest?

I have to say that they get nowhere near the amount of traffic Jalopnik does. At least from a quick search.
